The Art Therapy Fairy has graduated!
Kylin A. Jewell is originally from Tucson, Arizona.
She graduated from The School of the Art Institutue in May of 2015 with her Master of Arts in Art Therapy. She completed a minor in Psychology and Bacherlor of Arts from the University of Arizona with an emphasis in two-dimensional design in May of 2010.
Kylin grew up hiking in the desert, running through monsoons, climbing trees, and performing with the Tucson Regional Ballet Company.
After sustaining an injury, she rediscovered her love of movement and connection with her body through yoga (Asana) and meditation Practice.
That being said, she always relied heavily on her visual art practice as a way of documenting and uncovering her emotional reactions to these and other life experiences. Creating art was (and remains) a space for breathing - realizing.
Noticing connections between art-making, movement, and mindfulness feuled her studies and continues to be a source for inspiration.
In working with clients she incorporates relational, person-centered, existential and mindfulness approaches. She believes building the therapeutic relationship is of utmost importance before client and therapist can move into goal development and working on presenting problematic behaviors or circumstances that cause them distress.
For Kylin, operating from a person-centered and existential theory means paying critical attention to the stories clients feel inclined to share and the personal meaning that these stories hold for them. What is important and recurring for the client informs what happens subsequent sessions.
By allowing sessions to be client-led and art-informed, Kylin encourages those she works with to notice themselves, what their work - whether it is in the form of talk or art - brings to the session, and come to their own solutions.
Kylin brings a sense of play into sessions, when appropriate, hoping that she can share her joy and trust in art Practice with all who cross her path.
